1. Make sure the coverings are secure
   If you have short, thick shingles, odds are you won’t need to repair them often. The thicker and heavier a shingle, the more durable it will be. A single layer of thinner shingles will typically not last as long. If you wish to add a second layer to your roof, it is essential that you first remove any shingles in the bottom layer with water damage.
2. Check up on the fasteners
   For asphalt shingles, there are a couple of things that can go wrong. First, the wrong type of nail can be used. If the nail is not aluminum, stainless or galvanized steel, or some other corrosion resistant material, then they can rust, weakening and staining the roof. Second, the fastener can be misaligned or installed at the wrong depth. If the fastener is crooked or too shallow, it will not properly anchor the shingle. If the fastener is driven too deep into the roof, it can tear and damage the shingle it is securing.
3. Make sure the framing is structurally sound

A roof is only as strong as its weakest element. And if that element is the sheathing holding it up, things can deteriorate rapidly. Fortunately, there is a surefire test to check for weak spots. If you can do it safely, simply walk upon the roof to look for soft spots. If you feel some give under your feet, you should give the sheathing there a closer look.
