Owning a home is no easy thing. For many homeowners, it may seem that all they do is repair, fix up, and repair some more around their home. In fact, on average, homeowners will spend between 1% and 4% of their home’s value annually on maintenance and repairs. Not only that, but this number tends to increase as the home ages.

However, one of the easiest ways to reduce your number of repairs is to invest in preventative maintenance. This is especially true with your roof.

So to prevent wear and tear on your quality roofing, here are some roofing maintenance myths not to believe.

Myth: Your warranty covers everything

It can be easy to assume that a roof’s warranty covers everything and anything. This is untrue as it completely depends on your roofing company and the preventative maintenance you put into it. So, make sure to read thoroughly before you sign on any dotted line.

Myth: All shingles are the same

There are plenty of different kinds of shingles, but each has advantages and disadvantages based on your roof’s size and your environment. While asphalt tends to be the most common, there are also slate and even metal options you can choose from.

Myth: It is always good to power wash your roof

Contrary to popular belief, power washing is actually horrible for your roof. Not only can it cause your shingles to tear off, it can cause extreme water damage to the underlying sheets of plywood as well. And when those panels are saturated with water, that water trickles through your ceilings, down your walls, and causes structural problems and even mold. With these risks in mind, stay far away from that washer!

Myth: My gutters are a completely separate system from my roof

You should always think of your gutters being an extension of your roof. To put it simply, if your gutters have a problem, your roof does, and vice versa. Without ensuring the structural integrity of both of these things, you’ll soon be in need of repairs.

Keep your roof in tip-top shape by keeping these myths in mind, and more importantly, calling for help when you think something is wrong. If you have any concerns or questions concerning your roof, don’t hesitate to contact our experts today!
